Our Doctors
We make it a policy to ensure that all staff members are up-to-date on the latest technology and techniques to make your visit as comfortable and effective as possible. Dr. Bruce Johnson
Dr. Bruce Johnson, our principal optometrist, moved to Wetaskiwin following graduation from the University of Waterloo in 1994. Raised in Cold Lake, Alberta he knew he wanted to practice and raise a family in a medium sized community in Alberta. He has found the perfect home here in Wetaskiwin. He, together with Dr. Lorrie Oliver, worked for Family Eyecare Clinic until 1998, when together they formed their own private clinic: Drs. Johnson and Oliver - Optometrists. In 2000 they were pleased to welcome another optometrist to the office, Dr. Don Martin. Dr. Johnson feels very strongly about staying on the cutting edge of eyecare, using the most modern equipment available, and providing current and ongoing education for both doctors and staff. Dr. Johnson's dedication to vision care extends into all aspects of his life, both professional and personal. An avid traveler, Dr. Johnson has ventured extensively across North America. In 2004, he combined his profession with his love of travel, and journeyed to Nepal with Remote Area Medical (RAM) Volunteer Corp. He, along with other optometrists, general physicians and nurses, gave essential care to a very isolated population in Nepal. The experiences he had in Nepal, as well as other worthwhile eyecare projects, have been vital to his development as a doctor. Fortunately, another of Dr. Johnson's interests is photography. We are very pleased to have a display of his original photographs serving as the artwork in our office. Feel free to stop in anytime to take a look! Married to Dr. Oliver in 1997, Dr. Johnson feels strong roots in the Wetaskiwin community. They are raising two sons: Ethan, born in 2002, and Craig, born in 2006. He looks forward to the time when he and Dr. Oliver can share their love of travel, to show them what a wonderful, diverse world they live in. He is a very active volunteer, locally with the Rotary, SPELL Literacy Board and various church committees, and professionally with the Alberta College of Optometrists as well as on various eyecare projects. Dr. Johnson welcomes all new patients to the office. His interest in general family optometry, contact lens technology, as well as treatment and management of eye disease keep him busy with patients of all ages.
Dr. Lorrie Oliver
Dr. Lorrie Oliver, our transplanted Westerner was born and raised in the cottage district of Northern Ontario. This small town upbringing forged an interest in helping others and creating better communities. In 1993 Dr. Oliver graduated from the University of Waterloo with a Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Optometry. The following year Dr. Oliver moved to the Wetaskiwin area with Dr. Johnson to begin practicing with Dr. Martin. While working in Wetaskiwin, she also worked part-time with a practice in West Edmonton. In 1998, Dr. Oliver and Dr. Johnson created their own practice, Drs. Johnson & Oliver - Optometrists. Dr. Oliver has focused her education toward pediatric vision care, from prescribing glasses for young children to diagnosing and treating binocular vision problems. Dr. Oliver and Dr. Johnson were married in 1997, and are proud parents of Ethan, born in 2002, and Craig, born in 2006. A busy working mother, Dr. Oliver is also a community booster, spending countless hours devoted to the Wetaskiwin Girl Guides, an organization that made an impact on her own upbringing. Her interest in working with children has lead her to teaching Sunday school, which she finds very rewarding. Committed to quality vision care for the whole family, Dr. Oliver welcomes new patients of all ages. Her patience and friendly demeanor can win over the most hesitant young patient.
Dr. Don Martin
Dr. Martin attended Pacific University in Oregon where he earned his Bachelor of Science and Doctorate of Optometry degrees. After graduation in 1973 he settled in Wetaskiwin working with Dr. Rod French. Since graduating he has attended yearly continuing education courses to keep updated with advancements in professional knowledge and technology. He's old enough to remember his pre-school years playing in the backyard of his home near McKernan School in Edmonton watching milk being delivered by horse-drawn Silverwoods Dairy wagons; and huge blocks of ice for the icebox refrigerator being delivered to those neighbours on the block that didn't have an electric refrigerator. And he's young enough to still have children in grade school. In this relatively short period of time there have been tremendous changes and the profession of optometry is no exception. With the advent of computer-assisted instruments the ability to detect, treat and monitor eye disease, and store and manage records, has changed and improved dramatically. The scope of practice of optometrists has expanded; they are educated and responsible for testing, diagnosing and treating more eye conditions and diseases. Optometrists, ophthalmologists, family physicians and other health professionals are working much more closely together to co-manage many eye conditions and general health problems. New contact lens and eyeglass materials and styles are more fun, fashionable and convenient; and have superior vision correction properties. These changes have greatly enhanced the vision care the public receives from modern optometrists. Dr. Martin is proud to be part of an optometry practice whose doctors all live and are active participants in the Wetaskiwin community. Their clinic has state of the art eye care diagnostic and treatment instrumentation. They are supported by a friendly and knowledgeable staff of optometric assistants, receptionists, fashion consultants and opticians. For those whose vision benefits from eyeglasses or contact lenses there is a large and fashionable selection of the most up-to-date styles and materials. Dr. Martin feels very privileged that he benefits from the best ongoing professional education available, works with the latest technology, and is part of a team of progressive professional staff and colleagues whose mandate is to provide superior eye care to the Wetaskiwin regional community. Dr. Martin encourages people of all ages to have regular eye exams. He looks forward to meeting you in his clinic.
